This is a special edition of the TechSummit Rewind, focusing on Acer’s IFA 2016 press conference.
Swift 7 is first laptop thinner than a centimeter
Acer’s Swift 7, powered by Intel’s 7th generation Core i5 processor and Windows 10, measures 9.98mm to become the world’s first laptop to be thinner than a centimeter (0.39 inches). Despite this, not much is sacrificed in terms of ports and battery. It offers two USB-C 3.1 ports and a headphone jack, plus Acer promises nine hours of battery life thanks to Intel’s Y series chips.
The display is a 13.3-inch 1080p HD IPS panel with nothing to distinguish it. Inside, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD sit alongside the Intel Kaby Lake chip, which is cooled without fans. The Swift 7’s outfitted in an aluminum unibody chassis that’s dark on the outside with a gold interior.
Weighing in at 2.48 pounds (1.1kg), the Swift 7 launches in China in September for ¥6,999, followed by an October launch in Europe and the U.S. for €1,299 and $999, respectively.
The Spin 7 might as well be the Swift 7’s cousin. With one extra millimeter of thickness, its’ screen rotates 360 degrees around its axis. You can fold it into a tent for Netflix (and chilling), or flip it all the way around for table mode.
That hinge holds a 14-inch 1080p IPS touchscreen.
The Spin has an aluminum unibody design that weighs in at 2.6 pounds.
Inside, there’s an Intel Core i7 processor, up to 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD. In terms of ports, tehre’s only a pair of USB 3.1 Type-C ports and a headphone jack.
On the left side, there’s a power button and a volume rocker. The Spin has an extra-wide glass trackpad (like the Swift). Acer is promising up to eight hours of battery life.
The Spin 7 goes on sale in October for North America and Europe, starting at $1,199 or €1,299.
Predator 21 X
Lastly, Acer’s delivered a beast in the Predator 21 X. Along with a curved 21-inch 2560×1080 IPS display (the first ever in a laptop), there’s two GeForce GTX 1080 GPUs, five cooling fans, a seventh-generation Intel Core K-series processor, and space for up to 4TB of SSD storage.
Each Predator 21 X will be made to order, starting in January. Among other cool features, there’s room for up to 64GB of RAM, Tobii eye-tracking, a mechanical keyboard, a 4.2 sound system, a window to show off one of the fans, and a numpad that flips over to turn into a touchpad, and an SD card slot.
There’ll also be LED illumination, and what might go down as the world’s biggest power brick.
