TechSummit Rewind #055: Samsung at MWC 2016

Editor’s Note: This is a special edition of the TechSummit Rewind, covering Samsung’s MWC 2016 announcements.

Not to be outdone by Korean rival LG, Samsung unveiled some of their latest wares at their Mobile World Congress Unpacked event in Barcelona.

The Seventh Galaxies

Samsung Galaxy S7

“We believe in a world that is brighter, sharper, more convenient, and more fun. We strive to deliver on that vision with the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge by marrying elegant design with functionality and providing a seamless mobile experience. We empower consumers with technology to help them get more out of life and will continue to push the frontier of what’s possible.”

-DJ Koh, Samsung Electronics mobile communications business president

The Galaxy S7 and S7 edge introduce a Dual Pixel camera to deliver “brighter and sharper images,” according to Samsung. New camera mode Motion Panorama brings movement to traditional panoramas.

The 5.1-inch S7 and 5.5-inch S7 edge are constructed with 3D glass and metal with ergonomic curves. The devices also feature Always-on displays for a “simplified, zero touch experience.” Both devices have IP68 water and dust resistance.

On the S7 edge, Edge UX provides shortcuts to functions like email, taking selfies/panoramas, or third party applications.

Both devices support wireless charging, along with a hybrid SIM card tray for microSD card support or dual SIM card support.

Samsung also announced a focus on gaming with a faster processor and bigger battery, and an internal cooling system to prevent overheating. Game Launcher lets users manage battery consumption and minimize notifications. Additionally, users can record their gameplay or share their screen to play with others.
