Alcatel drops the OneTouch
Alcatel has dropped “OneTouch” from its name to become simply Alcatel.
According to the company, the idea is to keep the brand name from sounding like a product name.
Alcatel announced the follow-up to its surprise Idol 3 hit with the Idol 4 and Idol 4S.
Both devices have light, plasticky bodies that come with either gold, gray, silver, or rose gold metal trim along the edges.
More importantly, both have Boom Keys that do different things based on what you’re doing. Long-pressing when the screen’s off launches the camera, while hitting it while listening to music shapes the audio with Waves audio processing.
The 4 is clearly the more low-end model, with a octa-core 1.7GHz + 1.2GHz Snapdragon 617 processor, 5.2-inch 1080p display, 13-megapixel rear camera, 16GB of external storage (with a microSD card slot), and a 2,610mAh battery.
The Idol 4S has a similar hardware experience to the 4 with beefier specs: an octa-core 1.8GHz + 1.4GHz Snapdragon 652 processor, a 5.5-inch Quad HD AMOLED display. The rear camera has also been bumped up to 16 megapixels. However, the best part might lay in the packaging, as the box it comes in doubles as a VR headset.
Plus 10 Tablet
Alcatel also announced its first two-in-one Windows 10 tablet, the Plus 10. The Plus 10 is powered by a 1.92GHz quad-core Intel Atom processor and 2GB of RAM, with up to 32GB of internal storage and a 10-inch 1280×800 display (as well as a microSD card slot)
Two front-facing speakers flank the screen, with a five-megapixel rear camera along with a 2-megapixel front camera.
A separate keyboard dock features a 2,580mAh battery that gives the Plus 10 a combined 8,410mAh of battery power. There’s also a full-sized USB port on the dock to connect external accessories like a mouse or hard drive.
The tablet also has a built-in 4G LTE modem with up to 150Mbps speeds that can also serve as a mobile hotspot.
The Plus 10 will be available in silver, white, black, and a “warm gray leather finish” when it launches this June in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa.
