LG Watch Urbane wants to beat Apple Watch at its own game

LG will unveil its first all-metal luxury Android Wear device, the LG Watch Urbane, next week at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2015 in Barcelona.

Juno Cho, LG Mobile Communications division president and CEO:

“The LG Watch Urbane’s classic design and smart features make it the perfect smartwatch to complement our G Watch and G Watch R, which were designed as more casual and active devices. LG Watch Urbane is an important part of our strategy to develop wearable devices that are worn and viewed as everyday accessories, not electronic gadgets.”

As its name suggests, the smartwatch is designed for a “sophisticated and cosmopolitan wearer that delivers unappalled technology and performance.”

The Watch Urbane follows in the footsteps of the company’s G Watch R, the first smartwatch with a full circular Plastic OLED (P-OLED) display, which LG launched last October.

While the G Watch R was designed with the active user in mind, the LG Watch Urbane is more formal with a thinner profile making it cater more to both men and women.

The Watch Urbane is crafted around the G Watch R’s same 1.3-inch (320×320; 245ppi) circular P-OLED display but features a narrower bezel that offers it sleeker lines. The Urbane’s stainless steel body is available in a polished silver or gold finish and is complemented by a natural leather strap for a “more classic” look. The strap can be replaced with any 22mm wide band to suit the occasion or the wearer’s mood.

Powering all of this is an intuitive touch-based user interface that makes the LG Watch Urbane compatible with smartphones running Android 4.3 and above.

Like the G Watch R, LG’s latest Android Wear device includes a PPG sensor that can measure a wearer’s heart rate and average pulse during exercise. Always-On ambient mode shows the time on the display in dimmed mode, saving battery life.

The Watch Urbane will be available in gold and silver. AT&T has announced that they will be carrying the Watch Urbane in retail and at on their website.

Jeff Bradley, AT&T Mobility senior vice president of device marketing and developer services:

“AT&T is excited to add the LG Watch Urbane to its industry leading selection of wearables. LG Watch Urbane combines the style of a classic timepiece with the latest technology that makes it easy to stay connected on-the-go. It’s stylish, cutting edge and convenient, so you can wear it to nearly any occasion and still receive notifications that matter most.”
